The Akita Inu is an ancient Japanese breed, formerly used for bearhunting, guarding the house, absued for pitfighting, etc. The Akita is considered a national monument in Japan and exporting Akitas has long been forbidden as the animal was placed under protection.
Akitas grow 65-70cm high (shoulder) and can weigh 35 to 40 kilograms (Japanese type). Their ears are considered "the windows of the heart" and their eyes as "the mirror of the heart". This dog doesn't smell. Akitas are very clean animals who wash themselves like cats do, and they like to do their "business" in privacy. They may love hunting (silently) but they're not the hyperkinetic type! Akitas are calm and composed.
Akitas love hunting, so they're not to be left off leash where there is game. However, something else provides an even stronger reason to keep an Akita in check: due to their natural arrogance, these dogs are very dominant towards dogs of the same sex, especially males. If the other dog doesn't admit defeat, it may "crash'n'burn". The same arrogance, but not aggression, goes toward humans most of the time: while Akitas won't bite or bark for nothing, they won't wag their tail for just anyone either. Even as the owner, you have to earn his respect or otherwise, he'll clearly show you that you can kiss his butt. Plus, the Akita is intelligent. They think before they obey. Don't bore them with "Sit, down, sit, down, sit, down" or he may just walk away.
No, the Akita is definately not an ordinary dog...
