Budapest – A band conveyor full of young biddies. Workers sort them: the males stay on the band conveyer, the females are thrown into a big steel funnel, the shredder.

Cruel everyday life at a Hungarian factory of FOIE GRAS, a popular delicacy. The livers of female biddies don't grow fat enough, so they are shreddered alive and turned into carcass meal.

With a campaign, the animal welfare association "Vier Pfoten" (Four Paws) now fights this "gourmet cruelty". The surviving ducks and geese get a tube, well 22 inches/55cm long, forced down their throat 2 to 3 times a day.

They're stuffed with mashed corn, by force. This is how the fat liver, "foie gras" in French, an abnormally enlarged organ, is produced and sold for €60 to €200 per kilo!

Hungary, Poland and France are the biggest producers. In Germany, this stuffing of geese is verbidden, however, the import of frozen products has risen from 90 to 168 tons since 2000.
